I will not be doing many editions of Hip-Hop weekly unless there is an event that is of significance to the culture in a positive matter like the sole story I will cover. This is due to a couple reasons, the main one being that I frankly don’t have enough time to research and report issues, and I would rather take that energy to give some spotlight to artists in New York then to report news, so expect to see some interviews in the future. 1. Jaden Smith is the next 50 Cent…of beveragesJaden Smith is a weird individual. I don’t quite get his style of rap, and I don’t think I'm supposed to. I can't even say I dislike it - I just don’t get it. But none of that matters because I'm talking about Jaden Smith the person, and this person is doing incredible things for the residents of Flint, Michigan. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Flint is still having a water crisis, due to lead pipes that have not been replaced on generations leaking lead and poisoning the water supply. The fact that this is still a problem shows me that no one in the government gives a damn. If this same thing was exposed in the top 10 cities in America (hint: it has) it would be taken care of in an expeditious fashion. But this is flint, so it's not as important (also, Flint's population is almost a majority black population, coincidence?). It has been over 5 years now, and many people have simply forgotten about flint. Sure you have those such as Kyle Kuzma and others bringing awareness and donating their time and money to helping the town, but that is not enough. They alone cannot supply water for a whole town. Donations for bottled water have also dried up as well, meaning that there are so many people that are literally being poisoned by our government. Where Jaden Smith comes into the picture is through his company JUST goods. JUST goods sells JUST water, an organically sourced water which is put in a easily recyclable bottle. All that good environmental stuff. But just giving out environmentally friendly water isn't enough. What JUST water has developed is an entire filtration system that can be set up on the go! The Water Box is a system which is able to filter out the contaminants like lead in water and allows the water to be put in containers to give to families in need. The company has partnered with a local church to set up this system and deploy it when needed for the community. I usually don’t cover stories of rappers giving back because most of the time, in my opinion, rappers engage in what I call unethical charity. In other words, they will give back in the form of putting money into a school drive or giving out items to people and while that is a good deed, it's not solving the systematic issues that plague their hometowns. This is an artist putting their money into a company with a goal and vision of making the world a better place through environmental conservation and that vision overlapped perfectly with this water crisis. I hope that more rappers see that in order to make a change, you need to attack the systematic problems that effect people and not just put a Benjamin Franklin band-aid on it.
