It signifies a desire for quiet refuge from a loud, demanding world, expressing deep weariness and longing for peace, often interpreted as wanting to "die" metaphorically from sensory overload or emotional struggle, famously used in “Stranger Things” during moments of near-death or profound loss for characters like Will and Max, making the lyrics resonate with survival and survival's aftermath. The phrase captures a feeling of being overwhelmed, where the coldness of winter mirrors an internal coldness, prompting a wish to simply cease struggling against the "tide".
