Author: David Jones

This podcast is designed for students majoring in hospitality and tourism management who have an internship or work experience requirementincluding those with an event management or MICE emphasis, as it's known in many parts of the world. Over the years, I've experienced every aspect of the internship process: as a hospitality professional hiring and managing interns, as a faculty member supervising students in the field, and as an academic administrator developing internship-based curriculum. Most recently, I've even worked part-time at the front desk of a local resort hotel. So, I've experienced every aspect of the process. Now, I want to put that experience to work for you. The podcast is organized into three chapters:Foundations explores key concepts to help you prepare for your internship and understand its role in your future career. Note that the episodes are categorized as Before, During and After internship topics to address whatever stage you are at.Real Time shares insights from my own recent front-line experience in the hotel industryoffering practical, on-the-job takeaways.Alumni Voices features conversations with former students who reflect on their internship experiences and how those moments helped shape their career paths.Whether you're just getting started or already on the job, you'll find something useful here to guide and inspire your journey. Tuesday, 3 February, 2026

In this episode of Alumni Voices, I talk with Jeanne Hizon, Director of Sales at the Kimpton Hotel Enso in San Francisco. Jeanne shares how curiosity, relationship-building, and adaptability helped her turn early frontline jobs into a thriving career in hotel sales — and why networking remains her superpower.📌 Key Takeaways:• Curiosity opens doors – Jeanne’s journey began by simply asking hotel guests how they got into the business.Learning by doing builds confidence – Working in hospitality while studying at SFSU let her immediately apply what she was learning in class.Sales needs a spotlight – She reminds students that sales is a powerful, people-driven path within hospitality often overlooked in internships.Tech can’t replace human connection – Tools like Amadeus and Salesforce help, but empathy and authentic service define success.Networking never stops – Jeanne believes staying connected and giving back are the keys to long-term career growth.
