In Mark 8:1–10, a great multitude has been following Jesus for three days with nothing left to eat. Rather than sending them away hungry, Jesus looks upon them with compassion and performs another remarkable miracle—feeding approximately 4,000 people with only seven loaves and a few small fish. But this passage is about more than multiplying bread. It reveals the compassion of Jesus, the power of Jesus, and the continuing struggle of His disciples to understand who is standing right in front of them. In this verse-by-verse study, Jim Murrell examines the feeding of the 4,000, its similarities and differences with the feeding of the 5,000 in Mark 6, and what this miracle teaches us about trusting Christ when our resources seem insufficient. The same Jesus who saw the hungry multitude, understood their need, and provided more than enough still reminds us that what seems impossible to us is never beyond His power.
