When It's Not Laziness: Understanding Behavior & Regulation
Episode 3
Wednesday, 4 February, 2026
Nicole Rolon-Caro started her career in special education, working with students who were often labeled as “unmotivated,” “defiant,” or “emotional,” when in reality they were struggling with regulation, communication, and feeling misunderstood. Over time, she saw how quickly behaviors escalated when students didn’t have the tools—or language—to explain what was happening internally. That experience led her to create Emerging Adulthood Consulting. She helps students understand why they react the way they do and how to build skills that lead to more independence and confidence. Just as importantly, she supports parents in learning how to respond differently—so home doesn’t feel like a constant cycle of reminders, shutdowns, or power struggles. On this episode of Smart Parents Successful Students, you will hear:How to recognize when behavior is really emotional regulation or executive functioning challengesWays parents can support neurodivergent kids without escalating conflict or power strugglesTools to help teens and young adults build independence, communication, and self-awarenessHow families can move from frustration to clarity, connection, and confidenceYou can reach Nicole at nicole@emergingadulthoodtx.com.
