3. What is the hearing? Notice as well that the word was heard of all and that it was sown in their heart. It was not sown in the mind alone but in the heart, the seat of emotion. It required a response by those who heard. In the first case, the way-side or the pathway, the hearing is in the genitive case which means they heard but not with understanding, they heard the sound but it was not discernable. In the second type, the stony place, the hearing is in the accusative indicating and stressing "the thing perceived" as something with some good to it. The third, the weed filled ground, the hearing is a predicate nominative , that is, he is a hearer of the word. It appears that this one has a more contemplative understanding of the word that is sown, but he still lacks the understanding of it or more, the doing of it.
