a call to action on behalf of mother's raising black sons
Episode 4
Monday, 11 May, 2020
while every story of black death has broken my heart, #ahmaudarbery 's story wrecked me in a way i still haven't been able to articulate. and judging by the number of white friends (and blog readers) who reached out after my post to ask what steps and actions they can take to effect change, ahmaud's story did something to you too. so, i asked two very dear friends, @k_lenise and @mischiefmanagedarts to help me record an episode on this very topic. our plea is to stop trying to analyze or understand these shootings as isolated incidents. they are one of many symptoms of systemic racism. that's like planting a diseased tree, failing to treat it at its root then wondering why it still produces bad fruit. this episode is not designed to educate listeners on this history of systemic racism in america. there are already many pre-eminent voices in this space and, tbh, that is the work you need to do. but what it does, hopefully, is lay out a path from ally (shock/hashtag/run) to advocate (i'm educating, in relationship, and taking dismantling actions within my sphere of control). we've also pulled together a list - that is by no means exhaustive - of resources you can use to get started, which you can find here. please listen. comment. share. discuss. and consider this an open invitation for us to grow and unlearn together. for those at the start of this painful work, know that doing this journey outside of relationship is the marked difference between feeling like you are being called out rather than being called in. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/momtalk/message
