Iām David from Perfectly Spoken and in this podcast we are exploring the legend that is St Valentine.Every year on February 14th, people all over the world celebrate love. But do you know why?Today Iām joined by Stephanie who knows a lot about love. Hello StephanieSo presumably the story all started with a man named Valentine didnāt it?Stephanie: Yes. Thatās right. St. Valentine was a priest in Rome, many, many years agoāabout 1,700 years ago! At that time, the emperor, Claudius II, said that soldiers could not get married. He thought married men were not good soldiers. But Valentine believed in love, so he secretly helped soldiers get married. When the emperor found out, he was furious, really angry and put Valentine in prison.David: On no. poor Valentine. What happened to him there?Stephanie: Well, itās not all bad news for Valentine because while he was in prison, he became friends with the jailerās daughter. Some say he even fell in love with her. Before he died, he wrote her a letter and signed it, āFrom your Valentine.ā And thatās how the tradition of sending Valentineās cards began!David: Wow! How romantic. So, if Valentine lived today, I wonder what his life would be like?Stephanie: Very different for sure. Maybe he would use social media to spread love! Can you imagine him on Instagram or TikTok, helping couples and giving relationship advice? Maybe he would have a YouTube channel called "Valentineās Love Tips!"David:: Haha! That would be fun! And speaking of love tips, letās talk about Valentineās Day today. People celebrate by giving gifts like flowers, chocolates, and cards. Why is that do you think?Stephanie:Ā Well, red roses are a symbol of love, chocolates make people happy, and cards help people say sweet things to each other.David:: Thatās true! Itās all about showing love and appreciation. Some people also give teddy bears, jewellery, or even plan romantic dinners..Stephanie:Ā Exactly! But remember, Valentineās Day is not just for couples. You can show love to your friends, family, or even yourself. Buy yourself some chocolateāwhy not?David: Great idea. Yes! And donāt forget to spread love and kindness every day, not just on February 14th.Thatās all for now.
