House Passes Budget-Tax Bill, Reviewing Series I Savings Bonds & Date the Rate, Marry the House
Episode 12
Thursday, 5 June, 2025
The House of Representatives recently passed a budget/ tax bill that would make the 2017 tax cuts permanent as well as eliminate taxes on tips for some taxpayers and eliminate tax on overtime income. In addition, the bill will increase and make permanent the estate tax exemption and extend tax breaks for small businesses. However, the bill is projected to increase the US budget deficit by $4.3 trillion over the next ten years, which has drawn the disapproval of Republicans in the Senate and the financial markets. The interest rates offered on Series I Bonds change every six months. This includes the fixed rate paid on new bonds and the inflation rate paid on new and existing bonds for the following six-month period. As these rates change it can make existing bonds (bonds issued in the past) less attractive and new bonds more attractive. For this reason, it is important to review the options available regularly. Many prospective homebuyers are holding out for a period when home prices may be more affordable due to lower prices, lower interest rates, or a combination of the two. But these two considerations are not equal. The “Date the Rate, Marry the House” strategy highlights the fact that buying a home is a long-term commitment while a mortgage may be a short-term commitment. Therefore, finding the right home should be the priority over the mortgage rate which may be refinanced in the future.Plus, a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board - It is graduation season at Planned Solutions.
