In January 1971, two teenagers hitchhiking along Interstate 75 in central Florida spotted a body floating in Lake Panasoffkee — a remote, swampy waterway 50 miles northwest of Orlando. The victim was a young woman, badly decomposed, with a man's size 36 belt wrapped around her throat. She carried no identification. No one reported her missing.
