If you haven't heard about it, from the 1950s through the mid-80s, the drinking water on that North Carolina Marine Corps base was filled with toxic chemicals. People were just living their lives, completely unaware that the water they were drinking, bathing in, and cooking with was essentially poisoning them. The fallout has been rough affecting people with serious illnesses like cancer and lifelong health problems. Our guest today is Laney Symanski. She grew up on that base. She share her personal journey with us and what it was like to be a kid there, the long-term health battles she's faced because of the toxic water, and how she's navigating her life today.
