When Cancer Treatment Ends, the Emotional Journey Continues
Monday, 17 August, 2026
A cancer diagnosis affects more than a person’s physical health. Anxiety, depression, trauma and emotional distress can arise during treatment and can continue long after treatment has ended. In this episode of the Cancer Assist Podcast, Dr. Bill Evans welcomes back Dr. Karen Zhang, a clinical health and rehabilitation psychologist and psychology lead at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Together, they explore why cancer-related mental-health concerns are so common, why they are often overlooked and how they can look different from anxiety or depression experienced outside the cancer setting. They also discuss medical trauma associated with complex treatments, barriers to accessing specialized support and VISTA, a virtual psychiatry program helping cancer patients receive timely, specialized mental-health care regardless of where they live.
