FRAUD, RANK & THE BATTLE OVER MARTIAL ARTS LEGITIMACYWhat happens to a martial arts system when its founder dies and there is no universally accepted successor? In this episode of Gotham Investigations, Jeffrey Giordano sits down with Manny Reyes Jr., founder of the Independent Kenpo Karate Systems (I.K.K.S.), to examine a controversial issue within modern martial arts: questionable rank, self-appointed leadership, and individuals presenting themselves as “Grandmasters” after the generation that established their systems is gone. The discussion begins with American Kenpo following the death of Ed Parker in 1990. Reyes describes Parker’s death as a turning point that contributed to the divisions seen within American Kenpo today. Giordano expands the discussion beyond Kenpo, addressing similar organizational splits involving Japanese karate, Okinawan systems, Goju-Ryu, and Taekwondo, where practitioners formed new organizations and leadership structures after founders or senior masters passed away. The episode asks an important and sometimes uncomfortable question: Who has the authority to promote the next generation once the recognized founder or master is gone? When individuals create their own organizations, award higher ranks, or begin using titles such as Grandmaster, where does legitimate evolution of a martial art end—and where do questionable rank and self-promotion begin? But this investigation is not simply about titles. It is about credibility, lineage, training, experience, and accountability. When a martial arts school claims someone is a Grandmaster, students and parents should look deeper. Who was their instructor? Who promoted them? What training did they receive? What is their documented history? Are their credentials legitimate?Gotham Investigations takes a closer look at fraud and questionable claims in the martial arts world and asks the question few people are willing to confront: When the master is gone, who decides who becomes the next Grandmaster—and who is investigating the people who simply crown themselves?PODCAST TIME BREAKDOWN00:00 – Fraud & Change in the Martial Arts Industry 00:34 – Manny Reyes Jr.: 50 Years in Martial Arts & American Kenpo 01:10 – Ed Parker’s Final Promotion Before His Death 02:25 – Modernizing Kenpo & the Beginning of IKKS 04:09 – Why Martial Arts Organizations Split After Their Founders Die 05:31 – Division & Problems Within American Kenpo 06:17 – Martial Arts Beyond Fighting: Giving Back 06:36 – Tank’s Story: Drugs, Alcohol, Suicide Risk & Mentorship 09:00 – How Martial Arts Can Change and Save Lives 11:04 – Bullying, Fighting & Manny Reyes Jr.’s Competition Career 12:44 – National Championships, MMA & Fighting for Chuck Norris 14:25 – Ed Parker’s Legendary Tournament & 110+ Competitors 16:10 – IKKS Expansion: 25 States & 20 Countries 17:42 – Why Traditional Martial Arts Must Evolve 18:53 – Jeff Speakman, Jiu-Jitsu & Modern Kenpo 19:23 – Social Media Attacks & the “Old Guard” of American Kenpo 20:54 – The IKKS Tiger & Dragon 22:03 – How to Join or Contact IKKS 23:13 – Martial Arts Fraud, Grandmaster Claims & Choosing a Legitimate Instructor 24:40 – Message to Parents: Get Kids Off the iPads & Into Activities 25:03 – Jeffrey Giordano Receives Lifetime IKKS Membership 25:25 – Manny Reyes Jr. Promotes Jeffrey Giordano to Fourth Degree 26:12 – Closing: Finding Direction in Today’s Martial ArtsFEATURED GUESTManny Reyes Jr. Founder – I.K.K.S.
