419 | Returning Responsibility During Regressive Play

In this episode, I answer a question about one of the most nuanced aspects of child-centered play therapy: knowing when to return responsibility to a child and when to step into a nurturing role during regressive play. If a child is pretending to be a baby, should I get their bottle or blanket? What if they continue asking me to do things after the role play ends? I explain why there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. Instead, the key is understanding why the child is asking. Whether the request is rooted in role play, power and control, learned helplessness, cooperation, or a genuine need for nurturance determines how I respond. I also clarify the difference between the encouragement pillar and returning responsibility, and why it's important not to confuse the two. Throughout the episode, I emphasize that CCPT is never about rigid rules—it's about understanding the child's motivation and responding in a way that protects both the therapeutic relationship and the child's growth. This conversation highlights the importance of clinical discernment and trusting the principles of the model rather than relying on automatic responses.
