Episode 63 - 'The Psychology Of Horror Movies' - In Conversation with Psychotherapist Katie Evans

Welcome back everyone, we hope you had an amazing festive period with your families, friends and loved ones and feeling recharged & refreshed as we enter what looks to be another 12 months filled with madness at the hands of those who steer our societies. In this our first episode of 2026 we delve back into the movie world with our special guest, psychotherapist and public speaker Katie Evans. This episode is all about the darkest genre Hollywood has to offer and we discuss what it is within ourselves that makes this genre so successful. Yes, you guessed it, we are diving into the vast, dark ocean of Horror movies that Hollywood has served to us over the decades with the razor-edged intention of scaring the living hell out of us. Brother Paul and his delectable guest Katie have been lovers of horror their whole lives which leads to a fascinating discussion and a range opinions on some of your favourite horror movies. Katie has been a practicing psychotherapist for over a decade specialising in many areas of human psychology to help those in need overcome traumas, phobias and a multitude of obstacles that they encounter in life that have held back their personal development and life journey. Brother Paul attended one of Katie’s presentations in Glasgow on one of her current speaking tour dates just before Christmas. Her topic of discussion that evening was ‘The Psychology of Horror Movies’ and it’s this particular presentation that we concentrate on in this episode. Many movies are discussed throughout the episode but the core of the discussion centres around 3 productions that really lift the lid on the Psychology behind why we love Horror. The first, William Friedkin’s ‘The Exorcist’ released in 1973, changed not just the world of horror movie production but the world as a whole forever, sending shockwaves around the earth that still reverberate to this day 52 years later! Mass hysteria and psychosis exploded around this film and for good reason as we watched 12 year old Regan’s battle against a Legion of dark entities intent on her immortal destruction. The second, Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ from 1980 is also a classic that has bled into every corner of pop culture, from classic memes to what has become the most famous carpet in movie history stained with the infamous words and familial murderous intention of husband and father Jack Torrance. I mean who doesn’t know one of the most famous lines in cinematic history? “All work and No play makes Jack a dull boy”?The third movie, directed by Matthew Holness is ‘Possum’. This psychological horror is dark, grungy and disturbing beyond what you can imagine. The darkest most taboo subject areas are encountered in this dance with trauma and the uncanny.
