Episode 1
Tuesday, 14 April, 2020
In this podcast, called « Apéro à la Radio », Emma, Nick, and Justin discuss bar culture from the French Second Empire to now. First, Emma provides a study of the new urban landscape of Paris resulting from the Haussmann renovations, and how its new physical spaces, particularly the café and bar, shaped bohemian culture. Next, Nick analyzes the bar experiences of two bohemian poets: Arthur Rimbaud and Walt Whitman. He compares these experiences, and the influence of the bar as a bohemian establishment on the literature and lives of the two poets. Finally, the art of jazz requires rapid adjustments among the musicians in an ensemble to form a cohesive sound and develop musical ideas. Justin explores the act of coming together in physical spaces, such as bars, to induce this process in the case of the illustrious Django Reinhardt.
