struggle, identity + scripts
Sunday, 19 April, 2026
In this episode, we unpack the unspoken scripts that shape how marginalised lives are understood, particularly the expectation of struggle as a defining feature of identity. While struggle and inequality are very real, we explore what happens when suffering becomes the primary way people are seen, validated, and made legible. Moving through ideas from thinkers like bell hooks and James Baldwin, alongside pop culture and everyday examples, this conversation examines how struggle can become a kind of social currency — something compared, performed, and even quietly romanticised. Ultimately, we sit with a more difficult question: if identity is no longer anchored in hardship, what does it mean to exist beyond it?
