Ep286 - Lessons from a lifetime of working dogs: Roger Mayer APM
Episode 286
Saturday, 3 October, 2026
In this episode of Life With Your Dog, Panos sits down with Roger Mayer APM (Australian Police Medal)— former NSW Police Dog Unit Sergeant, instructor and highly experienced working-dog trainer. Roger spent decades working with police and working dogs, developing an understanding of what makes dogs tick when reliability really matters. His career has included handling and training police dogs, tracking offenders, search work and developing dogs capable of performing under pressure. Roger was awarded the Australian Police Medal in 2012 for his service. Panos and Roger dive into the world of working dogs and discuss genetics, drive, selecting the right dog for the job, building motivation, obedience, tracking, scent work, pressure in training and the relationship between a dog and its handler. They also explore what decades of working with dogs have taught Roger about modern dog training — and how lessons developed in the working-dog world can apply to the everyday dogs living in our homes. There are plenty of stories along the way, but more importantly, plenty of lessons from a man who has spent a lifetime watching dogs work when the stakes are real. A fascinating conversation about dogs, training, instinct, reliability and trusting the animal on the other end of the lead.
