Chasing BraveryAuthor: Kaitlin Aubin, CIMHP, MPH, LCSW
Chasing Bravery is an authentic platform for sharing the real stories of women, as they pertain to all things related to reproductive health and womanhood. This platform supports the reality that those who identify as female or female identifying do not experience their gender/sexual identity as being binary or the main component that shapes their overall identity. Chasing Bravery seeks to address the stigmas and predetermined narratives many women and those who are female identifying feel stifled under, by sharing authentic narratives told by those who have lived them. Episode 45: Kate Grace
Episode 45
Friday, 10 April, 2020
Hello! Welcome to episode 45 of the Chasing Bravery Podcast! Today I am speaking with professional runner for Nike, Olympian, and believer of sharing and engaging in the process Kate Grace! In college Kate went to Yale (she’s pretty smart, AND fast) where she broke four school records, won six Heps Championships, and was four time NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country All-American. Post collegiate, Kate continued to train and race- competing in the 2012 US Olympic Track and Field Trials where she placed 20th in the 1500. For the next 4 years Kate continued to train and improve through bumps in the process. By 2016 Kate was ready to go having improved her personal best in both the 1500 meters and the 800 meter running a notable sub 2 minute prior to the trials. For those of you who are track lovers, you know how the 2016 US Olympic Track and Field Trials, 800 meter final unfolded. Kate ran a strong, smart race…winning in a time of 1:59:10. Unfortunately, the race behind her had ended in upset with multiple racers becoming caught in a fall. Kate handled this damper on her win with grace and poise and went on to place 8th at the 2016 Olympics- the top American woman and running a PR to boot. Today Kate trains with the Bowerman Track Club and is in pursuit of second Olympic Games which have been officially postponed until July of 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Kate and I discuss her feelings about this major shift in training and how she is processing and moving forward. We chat about how it is ok and normal to feel disappointed while feeling 100% certain that postponing is the right thing to do. It was a pleasure to speak with this speedy, intelligent, and thoughtful lady. I know you will enjoy the conversation as much as I did!
