Two hundred years ago, prairies covered most of Illinois. Today, less than 0.01% remain, and much of it is hiding behind cemetery fences. In Will County’s Vermont Cemetery Preserve, a one-acre pioneer burial ground that was never plowed still holds some of the state’s rarest prairie.
