Jesus Cleanses the Temple
Sunday, 22 March, 2026
This passage reveals Jesus not only as a figure of grace and compassion but also as a divine agent of holy judgment, confronting the desecration of the temple with righteous indignation. The scene at the temple, where commerce and exploitation had corrupted the sacred space of worship, exposes Jesus' profound zeal for the purity and holiness of God's presence, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah's cleansing of the temple. His dramatic actions—driving out merchants, overturning tables, and declaring His Father's house a house of prayer—demonstrate His authority as the divine Son who demands reverent, God-centered worship. When challenged for a sign, Jesus points to His resurrection, declaring that His body is the true temple, and His resurrection is the ultimate proof of His messianic identity and divine authority. This moment underscores that true worship must be rooted in reverence and awe, not pragmatism or human convenience, and that Jesus' holy zeal culminates in the cross, where He bore God's wrath to restore humanity to right relationship with a holy God.
