In Jharkhand, coal robbery has become a way of life. It is estimated that thousands of families in the coal belt of Jharkhand survive just on pilferage. Coal theft has become a sort of occupation in Jharkhand, with mafias calling the shots and the government preferring to play a mute spectator. Millions of tonnes of black diamond are plundered annually, yet the rampant loot goes purposely unnoticed. The nexus stretches far across both sides of the law.
