A Survivor’s Journey: Louis Ngarambe
Episode 6
Sunday, 27 September, 2026
Louis Ngarambe was just eight years old when the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi began in Rwanda. In this episode of Memory, Evidence, Change, Louis shares his memories of growing up in a society increasingly divided along ethnic lines, the violence that transformed his childhood, and his family’s struggle to survive. He reflects on hiding from place to place, losing his father and other family members, and the moment when, after weeks without hope, liberation finally came. Louis also discusses what came after the genocide: returning home, rebuilding a family and a life, and eventually turning his experiences toward peacebuilding and helping others. Through his work with Initiatives of Change Rwanda and other organizations, he discovered that helping others confront trauma also helped him rebuild himself. Today, Louis brings his story into classrooms across New Hampshire, helping young people understand genocide, mass violence, and the importance of confronting misinformation and denial. His story is one of devastating loss, survival, education, and the gradual return of hope. #MemoryEvidenceChange #GenocideEducation #Rwanda #GenocideAgainstTheTutsi #SurvivorStories #Peacebuilding #HolocaustAndGenocideEducation
