She Left Her Waterpot From an Ordinary Waterpot to an Extraordinary Witness THE BRIDEGROOM AT THE WELL These truths centers on Jesus as the Sent Son, the Life-Giver, the Judge, and the Bridegroom who comes seeking and transforming His bride. John 5 shows us that Jesus lived in complete dependence upon the Father, doing what the Father showed Him and carrying out the will of the One who sent Him. That same pattern becomes the model for our lives: just as Jesus said He could do nothing independently of the Father, He later tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing. The Christian life is therefore a life of dependence, obedience, and joining Jesus in what He is already doing. John 5 also establishes that the Father has committed judgment to the Son. Jesus' verdict concerning humanity is true: we are guilty, spiritually dead, and unable to give ourselves life. Yet the wonder of the gospel is that the Judge Himself took the judgment of the guilty upon Himself. He stood in our place so that He could freely grant us His righteousness and everlasting life. Scripture points us to Him, for all of God's witnesses point us to His Son, because religious heritage, biblical knowledge, family background, or outward religion cannot substitute for personally believing and receiving Christ. The teaching then connects John 3 and John 4. John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Bridegroom, and immediately afterward Jesus goes to Samaria and sits beside a well. That setting echoes several Older Testament scenes where brides were encountered at wells: Rebekah for Isaac, Rachel for Jacob, and Zipporah for Moses.
