Violence and Moral Equivalency: USA vs Iran
Episode 252
Monday, 9 March, 2026
At this publication the USA and Israel are at war with Iran. Much has been made in media that this action represents aggression by the US and Israel, seemingly ignoring forty-seven years of consistent aggression and violence by Iran against America, "The Great Satan," and Israel. Many have trotted out the cliches "violence breeds violence" and calls for "immediate ceasefire," overtly or subtly conveying the idea that all violence is the same, that is, that all violence is morally equivalent. While I do not want nor promote violence, do not want war, do not trivialize the destruction and death of war, and realize noncombatants always get hurt, still, I do not believe all violence is morally equivalent. I also believe that sometimes bad or evil actors do not stop until they are violently coerced to stop. So it seems that Christians should study the Scripture and think with nuance and discernment before they label use of violence as ipso facto immoral.
