May 2 Discernment — Learning to Read What Your Heart Feels
Saturday, 2 May, 2026
Today’s discussion is about discernment and heart desires. Here the devotional; Devotional — Day 2: Discernment — Learning to Read What Your Heart FeelsMay 2Philippians 1:9–10Scripture:“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.”Devotional Reading:Discernment is one of the most misunderstood gifts in the life of a believer. It is not suspicion dressed up in spiritual language. It is not the cynicism that comes from being hurt too many times. It is not the walls you build to keep people out or the distance you maintain to feel safe.Discernment is love — with eyes open.Paul’s prayer in Philippians 1 is stunning in its construction. He does not pray for knowledge alone. He does not pray for insight alone. He prays that love would abound — and that out of that abounding love, knowledge and depth of insight would grow. Discernment, in Paul’s understanding, is rooted in love. It is what love looks like when it has been refined enough to see clearly. For so many of us, the journey to discernment begins with learning to read our own heart. To distinguish between the voice of the wound and the voice of the Spirit. The wound says do not trust — because trust has led to pain. The Spirit says discern — because not everything that looks like love is love and not everything that feels safe is sent by God.Your heart has been speaking to you. In the unease you felt in certain rooms. In the inexplicable peace you felt in others. In the way certain relationships drain you and certain ones restore you. That quiet language is your discernment developing. And this month we are going to learn to read it fluently.Reflection Questions:Think of a recent moment when you felt a quiet unease or a quiet peace that you could not fully explain. What was your heart trying to tell you? How did you respond to it?Prayer:Lord, let my love abound in knowledge and depth of insight. Teach me to read what my heart is truly saying. Sharpen my discernment so that I can tell the difference between what You are sending and what my own longing is reaching for. I trust You to be my clarity. Amen.⏱️ 3 Minutes to Sit and Listen to God:Set your timer for three minutes. Sit in stillness and quiet your thoughts. Ask God one simple question before you begin — what do You want me to hear today? Then listen. Do not fill the silence. Do not rush. Simply open your heart and receive. Whatever comes — a word, a sense of peace, a gentle nudge — honor it. He is speaking.
