Transgenic Animals for Diabetes Research

LMU veterinarian Eckhard Wolf and his colleagues have created a genetically modified strain of pigs that reproducibly develops diabetes mellitus. Using this animal model, new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities can be tested before being translated into clinical practice. By providing a bridge between an established laboratory model the mouse and humans, the pig may give us leads to new and improved drugs for the treatment of this burgeoning disease.
