Conversation with "The Selkie Bride's" Playwright Regan Hicks
Episode 19
Tuesday, 27 August, 2024
Listen along as Angelo discusses the new musical "The Selkie Bride" with the show's playwright Regan Hicks. The Selkie Bride is based on Celtic folklore regarding the selkie. The selkies were one of the original versions of mermaids. In water they are seals, but on land, they shed their fur to become human, and are able to interact with our world. The selkie women once they shed their fur, the men would try and take it from them entrapping them on land and in marriage. As Regan explains, the endings of these stories would be on the positive side where the selkie women end up finding their fur and return to the water, free. Regan created this musical at a time when there was an emphasis on women's empowerment in society and believed that this Celtic folklore reflected that. This musical will be taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!
