Cooperative Companionship vs Competitive Detachment and Ways of Seeing the World
Episode 29
Saturday, 9 April, 2022
Let's begin to pay attention to the ways we see the world. These ways are given to us often before our brains are developed enough to make a conscious choice. For instance, how do you define a person? How do you define a relationship? How do you define an event? Or what is your attitude toward change? Many of the issues that my clients deal with have to do with these hugely important decisions. Let's begin to acknowledge and build our character to now consciously choose how we see the world, rather than continue to use perhaps outdated and even destructive (to ours and perhaps others self-esteem, etc.) ideas that we didn't even know we were accepting (and really didn't have much choice about) when we were young. Researcher Darcia Narvaez has begun to cast amazing light on this subject and has given us the concepts of cycles Cooperative Companionship vs Competitive Detachment. For the vast majority of human existence, according to Narvaez, we have been in a cycle of cooperative companionship. It's only been more recently that we have found ourselves in a cycle of competitive detachment and this seems to be leading us more and more to a destructive place where there are a few "haves" and the rest are "have nots".
