The Mistreatment of Women of Color in Hospital SettingsAuthor: Deandra Dogonyaro
In the United States, there have been multiple women of color who have suffered the continuous backlash of racism in a place where you should feel the most protected. Hospital staff have neglected, belittled, and silenced women of color for far too long. The purpose of this podcast is not only to educate women of color on their rights when being in a healthcare setting but also to educate them on their bodies, as well as spread awareness to the topic. Questions that were asked: A doctor's office should be the last place you would expect to get mistreated because of the color of your skin. Based on the article you wrote for the Oprah magazine, sharing your own personal experience, what was the point at which you realized that you know you had to take matters into your own hands and how did that make you feel? Did anything that happened affect the outcome of the procedure you underwent? Who do you feel should be held responsible for the mistreatment of people of color? Do you feel like it is the government’s role to make sure people they hire have the common decency to treat ALL Americans? Or do you feel like this is an individual issue? There is also a scarcity of minority groups being represented in the healthcare system as well. Based on research we have conducted, African American medical school applicants have a lower acceptance rate to medical school. This doesn't really deem fair to people of color as a diverse physician population can better serve the diverse patient population we have in the United States. So how do you feel about this and what do you think can be done about this?
