Just Breathe: The Oxygen Debate After Cardiac Arrest

Oxygen is one of the most familiar resuscitation treatments. But after return of spontaneous circulation, how much is enough? Could limiting oxygen exposure reduce reperfusion injury and improve recovery, or does a more conservative approach introduce its own risks? In this month’s journal club, we examine the LOGICAL trial, a multicenter randomized clinical trial comparing conservative and liberal oxygen strategies in more than 1,800 unresponsive adults following cardiac arrest. Investigators looked beyond simply achieving ROSC or surviving hospitalization, examining favorable functional outcomes at 180 days.
