Trained as an engineer in Moscow and Dublin, he spent decades teaching and practicing in Damascus, all while developing a groundbreaking reinterpretation of the Qur’an. His books, including The Qur’an, The State and Society, and Towards a New Fundamental Jurisprudence, challenged traditional jurisprudence and called for a rational, contemporary reading of scripture.
