#2: History of the Heidelberg Catechism, Part 2
Sunday, 15 February, 2026
Commissioned in 1563 under Frederick III and authored primarily by Zacharias Ursinus, the Heidelberg Catechism provides one of the clearest and most Christ-centered summaries of the gospel in Reformed theology. In this Part 2, of Wayne's introduction to the Heidelberg Catechism, particular attention is given to the Catechism's threefold structure—guilt, grace, and gratitude—which unfolds the full message of salvation. This lesson also examines how the Heidelberg Catechism served as a faithful tool in the defense of the true gospel against later theological errors, especially those associated with the Mercersburg movement and theologians such as John Williamson Nevin and Philip Schaff. Mercersburg theology, while seeking to emphasize the church and the sacraments, departed from historic Reformed doctrine by elevating the role of the institutional church, weakening the centrality of justification by faith alone. Wayne Johnson serves as Provost of City Seminary of Sacramento, and is retired Elder of Covenant Reformed Church of Sacramento.
