What do video games have to do with human biology? Find out in this episode where Mecca chats with Dr. Rafael Bisso-Machado about the connections between video games and humans and how we can use video games as an interactive tool for teaching biology, culture, and language. Dr. Rafael Bisso-Machado is a geneticist whose research explores the intersections of human evolution, population diversity, culture, and technology. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, as well as a Master's and PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Throughout his career, he has held academic and research positions in Brazil and Uruguay, including serving as Assistant Professor at the University of the Republic (Uruguay), researcher at the National Institute of Forensic Science and Technology, and postdoctoral fellow at UFRGS and the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA). His research focuses on human genetics, particularly the historical and anthropological dimensions of Native and Neo-American populations, gene-culture coevolution, and human evolutionary history. Rafael also works at the interface between science and popular culture as a Scientific Consultant for Molecular Jig Games and Science GameCenter, author for Nerdizmo, and researcher with the GamePesq Research Group, where he investigates how video games can contribute to scientific communication, education, and public engagement with science.
