Joseph Smith, having temporarily escaped over the Mississippi to Iowa, is encouraged by Emma, Hyrum, and others to return and turn himself in at Carthage. Prophecies their death and goes. Farewell to Emma and signed blessing, military escort, Hamilton Hotel, strong mob presence, Governor Ford refuses to see them, has them accompany him as he publicly reviews troops, finally speaks with Joseph and prisoners, agrees multiple times to not leave them in Carthage if he leaves town, Joseph prophesies that men who have come to get a look at him will one day wallow in blood, court places him on house arrest, arrest warrant is delivered for treason against the United States, sent to Carthage Jail, John Taylor and Willard Richards, only two members of Twelve not out on political missions, accompany them, Uncle John Smith seeks assistance of prominent Church member and lawyer Almon Babbit - "I've already been hired by the other side", Governor Thomas Ford leaves Carthage without prisoners, leaving them to the mob, mob, painted black, sings, stops singing, heads up stairs, fires through door and from outside, Hyrum and Joseph are killed, John Taylor shot four times but survives, Willard Richards shot through earlobe but no holes in clothing, Willard responds to emergency, promises "we will not retaliate", newspapers report death of Mormonism.
