Washington Commanders @ Philadelphia Eagles Week 1 NFL Game Preview & Predictions

The Washington Commanders (0-0) take on the Philadelphia Eagles (0-0) on the road at Lincoln Financial Field to kick off the regular season this Sunday at 4:25pm ET on FOX in America’s Game Of The Week! This episode features a full game preview & game predictions.We begin with the context around the game in the form of the injury report, and it is already riddled with names for the Commanders. The big names are edge rushers K’Lavon Chaisson and Odafe Oweh, who have both been limited with injuries, as is starting RB Bill Croskey-Merritt, who has been limited with a groin injury. DT Daron Payne popped up on the injury report, limited with a knee injury, while the rest of the names are all full participants. The Eagles, in contrast, only have 2 names on their injury report: Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, acquired from Minnesota, and 2nd round TE Eli Stowers. Greenard is expected to be on a snap count if he plays, and Stowers may end up being inactive anyway, so the Eagles are very healthy overall.We begin the preview of the matchup with the Washington Commanders offense, featuring QB Jayden Daniels, against this excellent and consistent Philadelphia Eagles defense. David Blough is a first time playcaller, so he will have his hands full on the road in his debut. Can the Commanders run the ball? If they are able to, that should really open up the passing game for playmakers Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, and Chig Okonkwo. If not, we could see some attempted hero ball form Jayden Daniels that, while fun to watch, results in him exposing himself to unnecessary hits. The Eagles defense features 4 pro bowlers from last season, with the latter 2 being 1st team all-pro, in LB Zack Baun, DT Jalen Carter, and CBs Cooper Dejean and Quinyon Mitchell.We then flip the script and discuss the new look Commanders defense, featuring 1st round pick Sonny Styles, against QB Jalen Hurts, RB Saquon Barkley, and this Eagles offense. The offensive coordinator for Philadelphia this season is Sean Mannion, former QBs Coach with the Green Bay Packers. The plan is still to run the ball a lot, and Saquon Barkley loves playing the Commanders, going for over 115 rushing yards and a TD in all 4 of his games for Philadelphia against us. Can we slow him down? We’ve brought in OLB Odafe Oweh, S Nick Cross, and NT Tim Settle to help solve that problem. On the backend, the secondary will have to contain the one WR Jalen Hurts does have experience throwing to in DeVonta Smith and that’s where the Commanders can exploit this offense.The Commanders are 5.5 point road underdogs with an over-under set at 44.5 points.
