Red FlagWelcome To Mississippi Author: Podastery
Mississippi was the last state to actively fly the confederate battle flag within the canton of its own state flag. For many years, state-funded universities and some cities around the state refused to put up the flag. In 2001 a motion was put to popular vote, but in the end nothing was changed. As the issue became more urgent, with white supremacists flying not only the Confederate and the Nazi flags, but also Mississippis state flag, a group of Mississippians began creating a podcast to tell the story of how Mississippi is changing itself from within. We saw an opportunity to showcase the future of our state, not the past. We wanted our listeners to shape the outcome of that story. And they did. This is Red Flag. Episode 9: In Whom Do We Trust?
Wednesday, 14 October, 2020
Several years ago, when we started this podcast, we used stars as an example of how people of various perspectives and backgrounds can look at the same image but take different meanings from it. Obviously this was our entry point to talking about the now former Mississippi flag and the confederate imagery that was so prevalently featured on it. As we conclude this podcast with a look behind the scenes at the state capitol and look ahead to the new flag design referendum, we want to ask you to keep considering the question of how you view our home and what a place like Mississippi means to you.
