Acts 8.1-40 - Touched or Untouched by God's Grace
Thursday, 1 October, 2026
This sermon examines Acts chapter 8 to distinguish between genuine conversion and mere religious profession, using the contrasting examples of Saul and Simon the sorcerer. The speaker highlights how Saul's violent persecution of the church demonstrates the depth of human depravity prior to grace, while Simon's attempt to purchase spiritual power reveals the emptiness of a faith that lacks the new birth. The narrative progresses to the ministry of Philip in Samaria, where the distinction between public profession and the receipt of the Holy Spirit is clarified through the actions of Peter and John. The lesson culminates in the story of the Ethiopian eunuch, illustrating how the Holy Spirit guides individuals to understand the Messiah in Isaiah 53 and leads them to baptism. The overall tone is instructional and historical, emphasizing that true salvation is a divine work that transforms the heart rather than a human effort to acquire religious status.
