Hamilton on Xenophon's Anabasis
Sunday, 22 March, 2026
Chapter 10 from Edith Hamilton's The Greek Way concerns Xenophon, and focuses a majority of the chapter on his Anabasis - The Retreat, or the Return of the 10,000. This story serves as the means of a genre of return stories...consider Tolkien's 'There and Back Again' as but one notable example. Deep behind enemy lines, Xenophon and his men relied upon one another and chose to succeed because they were free, capable, independent Greek men. They shouldered the work and coordinated together to achieve an amazing result...a tale that is so very motivational across the Western world - TODAY. Do yourself the favor of reading Xenophon, though, by all means. He is most enjoyable; his narrative of Cyrus is definitely worth the investment.
