乍看题目《雨中的猫》，我们会将它想象成一个讲述雨中流浪猫的故事，其实真正折射出的是女主人公内心的苦闷。她因不经意地发现了窗外雨中的猫而外出冒雨寻找它，未果失望而归，却意外收到了旅店老板派人送来的猫。全文因猫而起，止于得猫，故事完整生动。然而，这个孤独无助的美国少妇并非心血来潮爱上了猫，而是在这只躲在窗下避雨的流浪猫身上看到了自己的影子，她和它都一样的孤寂无援，渴求温暖关爱
