Lessons My Father Never Taught Me, with John Volturo

Author: John R. Volturo, John Volturo

I always struggled growing up, and even today. Id look around and think, Why does that seem easier for that person to do than for me? Even though it is unfair to compare ourselves to others, we do it and we all do it. As I started thinking about this, I realized that maybe part of it for me was that I grew up without a father and learned or didnt learn things I needed to know to more easily be in life. Life felt like doing. Then, I started talking to others, and it seemed like I was not alone. This podcast is for us. In each episode, my guests will openly share the impact, gifts and struggles theyve been experiencing ever since childhood, and how theyve created their own lessons as they forged forward as adults. Lessons they want to share with you. Theres no dad bashing. No mom bashing. Just pure vulnerability and valuable insights on topics that really matter and that no one really openly discusses. Its my first podcast, so keep in mind it will get better with time. I hope you stick it out. The stories Im working on are fascinating and insightful, and I truly want to help people, so its all coming from my heart. Thank you!

Season 1 Episode 3 - Chris
Episode 3
Wednesday, 9 January, 2019

In this episode, I interview Chris. Chris is a native New Yorker, now living and working as an actor in Los Angeles. He is a GenX'er, and this is important only because of the era in NYC in which he matured. Chris was raised an only boy in a strict household, with a distant dad and mom, and two sisters. When tragedy struck his family, everything changed, and Chris was forced to grow in ways he never expected. Chris has been through it all. Adopted at birth, along with another sister, he grew up in a household of 5, where no one really talked, at least about what mattered. As Chris aged, events occurred and a secret he had been hiding was revealed, causing a rift that ended in a tragic circumstance. Chris was not derailed for long, though. He looked at the tragedy as an opportunity to take some of the lessons he learned growing up, twisting them into a shape that worked best for him, and then paying the lessons forward. I really enjoyed this interview, and think you will find that no matter what adversity the universe threw at Chris, he ultimately found a way to pave a different road for himself.
