The Naga Myths, Migrations, and the Rongmei Quest for Identity
Saturday, 11 July, 2026
The sources analyze the origins, migration patterns, and settlement history of the Naga tribes, with a specific emphasis on the Rongmei ethnic group in North-East India. Scholars utilize oral traditions, folk songs, and colonial records to trace their movement from mainland China through Myanmar to primary dispersal sites like Makhel and Makuilongdi. The texts highlight the geographical distribution of diverse Naga tribes across Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh while examining the etymology of the name "Naga." Detailed case studies focus on the Rongmei people, documenting their ancestral roots in the Tamenglong district and their historical integration into the Manipur valley. Furthermore, the documents explore the socio-political evolution of these communities, including their interactions with British administration, their transition toward Christianity, and modern movements for territorial integration and identity preservation.
