Symphony of the Brain

Decoding and demystifying epilepsy and the seizure

Author: Ikin Media

The brain is like an orchestra. A multitude of components plays their own part all coming together in a symphony of life. "Sometimes parts of the brain are forced to play a different song really fast, in perfect synchrony," says Dr Lila Landowski. "That is when a seizure happens." It's something that affects the lives of millions of people yet, as a society it's something most people don't understand and don't want to talk about. In Symphony of the Brain, we decode and demystify epilepsy, a condition that probably affects your friends and people you love.

Sudden and unexpected - the tragedy of SUDEP
Episode 5
Wednesday, 22 March, 2023

An epilepsy diagnosis comes with many harsh realities, and arguably the most difficult one is SUDEP, the sudden, unexpected death from epilepsy. Researchers do not clearly understand the exact cause of SUDEP. In this episode, we hear from three families tragically impacted by SUDEP and Neurologist Professor Sam Berkovic, who takes us through the current science surrounding this mysterious occurrence.  For more information on SUDEP, visit the Epilepsy Foundation's SUDEP explainer page.
