Six-time Grammy winner, acclaimed producer and Blue Note Records President Don Was has released his debut album with The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, a “nine-piece soul jazz group from Detroit” as he describes it. Groove in the Face of Adversity was released October 10, 2025 via Mack Avenue Records. Maggie & Don sat down to discuss his latest project and they dove into the deep musical roots, inspiration, and creative process behind The Pan-Detroit Ensemble and their debut album, Groove in the Face of Adversity. Don curated a lineup of elite, multi-generational Detroit musicians, which he discussed with Maggie and he group features longtime heavyweights like saxophonist Dave McMurray (Blue Note Records) and keyboardist Luis Resto (known for his Oscar-winning work with Eminem).  The Full Nine-Piece Roster: The lineup is completed by Vincent Chandler (trombone), John Douglas (trumpet), Jeff Canaday (drums), Mahindi Masai (percussion), Wayne Gerard (guitar), and the powerhouse, "Aretha-like" vocals of Steffanie Christi'an. It's a deep dive into the music and the city and the essence of the City of Detroit. They also wrap up the interview with a sneak peak of Blue Note Records releases.  Don Was (born Donald Fagenson on September 13, 1952) is an iconic American musician, six-time Grammy-winning record producer, and the President of Blue Note Records.
