Clued Up with Maria B: The Behind-The-Scenes Photography Podcast

Author: Maria B

How do you elevate your photography? If you read articles, listen to photography podcasts, watch a lot Youtube videos; and youve attended numerous workshops and conferences; youve probably tried lots of techniques-different lights and lighting set ups; you've purchased a ton of gear, software, and apps; or taken to the extreme, youve changed camera systems. And are your photos really that much better? What if I told you that the secret to better photos isnt in the latest gear or the latest preset? The secret to better photos is everything that goes on before the first time you click the shutter. Let me teach you how to build quality photoshoots and have a better photoshoot experience using These 5 Pillars to a Better Photoshoot:CORT-Consistency, Organization, Redundancy, and TimePhotoshoot Mapping and WorkflowSkills-Technical and People SkillsBusinessGrowthThese 5 Pillars will have you walking into any photoshoot, any set, any location, any event, and any business dealings with confidence. These 5 Pillars have taken me from shy, reserved, ladened with self-doubt and denying myself opportunities, to a determined, self-assured, on-set problem solver who welcomes challenges and who no longer negotiates pricing. Im your host Maria. I specialize in Portrait and Headshot Photography. My portraits are magazine-style contemporary images that allow my clients to be photographed the way they want to be seen by the rest of the world. That means working with MUAs, hairstylists, as well as my clients. It means learning to collaborate and to direct. Using these 5 Pillars has changed my confidence and my ability to interact with clients, collaborators, colleagues, and with businesses. These changes have lead me to expand my portfolio to engagement, maternity, and family photography; to operate two businesses, and to acquire my own studio. I know getting Clued Up to the 5 Pillars and to what has to go on behind the scenes in order to produce quality photoshoot experiences for you

Tethering Without Tears
Saturday, 14 March, 2026

Send a textYour shoot is flowing, the lighting is perfect, the poses are landing and then your screen freezes and the dreaded message pops up: camera not detected. I’ve lived that panic, and I’m breaking down how to make camera tethering reliable so it supports your creativity instead of sabotaging it.We start with what tethered shooting actually is: a photography workflow that changes how you see, judge, and refine your images in real time. I share why tethering in the studio can be such a game changer for portrait photography, branding sessions, headshots, product photography, and commercial work. When you review frames on a larger monitor in Capture One or Lightroom, you can catch flyaways, fabric wrinkles, focus softness, and subtle expression issues immediately, saving serious time in post-production and keeping your final set consistent. Then we get practical about the setup details that prevent most failures: choosing the right tether cable, using the correct camera port, connecting directly to your computer (no hubs, no adapters), and turning off sleep and energy saving settings so your connection doesn’t drop mid-session. I also explain the part photographers don’t talk about enough: cable weight and port stress. One preventable mistake cost me a $400 repair, and it’s why I now treat strain relief, tether guards, and base plates as essential gear, not accessories. We’ll also talk laptop port limitations, PD power delivery hubs, and when a docking station makes tethering smoother in a client-facing studio. If you want fewer interruptions and more confidence behind the camera, listen now, grab the checklist, and then subscribe, share this with a photographer friend, and leave a review so more shooters can stop fighting their tether setup.Questions or Comments?
