Chapter 4 - Rockville Centre
Episode 8
Thursday, 29 October, 2026
Send us Fan MailA move to Rockville Center is supposed to be a fresh start: better schools, more opportunity, a peaceful, suburban life across from a golf course. We follow Ken as he begins to notice the lines that divide everything. Lakeview is where the Black population lives. Black workers ride buses into white neighborhoods for domestic help. There are no Black kids in his school. Across the street, white golfers play while Black caddies carry their bags. And then comes the sentence that lands like a verdict: “They have a policy about Jews.” Suburban normalcy turns out to be exclusion with good manners, and a Jewish boy’s begins to question his American Identity.School brings its own lesson in belonging: a new classroom, stares, mocking laughter, and a shame that arrives in minutes and remains even longer. Home doesn’t feel safe either, with dread, break-ins, fights, and secrets the kids can’t name but still carry. What saves Ken isn’t a grand speech or a sudden victory it’s a Victrola, classical music, story records, library books, and later camp summers where reading and art provide refuge for his inner turmoil. If you care about memoir storytelling, Jewish identity in America, the history of segregation, and how music and literature can become safe haven, press play.
