Church (At our Best): Temple
Sunday, 22 June, 2025
Main Idea: Throughout the Bible, Temple is associated with God’s place of dwelling and abiding with God’s people on earth. The temple was a place of encounter with God. Everything about the Temple was designed to orient people to and represent the glorious praiseworthiness of God. If the church is God’s Temple, then we are supposed to be a community in which people can encounter and worship and be met by the Living God. We are supposed to point people to God, facilitate an encounter. Can people look at and be in our church and clearly see God represented everywhere? We are priests who help people experiencing God. The temple was also a shelter and sanctuary where people could go and get a respite from the storms of life. What does that mean for us as the church? We need to remember that we are a living temple and not static in one place though! Also, temples were places people went in hopes of healing. Aren’t we supposed to be like a field hospital for the hurting and broken? Temple as distinct from the palace/kings. Place of prophets and priests?“This means the Church is not just a place where Christ is discussed or admired but where he is encountered. To be the Church is to be drawn into Christ’s ongoing movement. It is to be the place where heaven and earth meet, where eternity interrupts time, and where Christ himself is made present through Word and sacrament.”Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 3:10-17; Ephesians 2:19-22
