Taking the Lead 77: Bethany U. Casagranda, DO, MBA | One of Many: Leadership, Legacy, and Lifting Others From shoveling coal in a small southwestern Pennsylvania town to becoming the first woman and first radiologist to serve as President of the Physician Organization and Chief Medical Officer of Allegheny Health Network, Bethany Casagranda, DO, MBA, has built a career by embracing opportunity, challenging expectations and creating environments where others can succeed. In this episode of Taking the Lead, Dr. Casagranda joins host Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR, to reflect on the experiences that shaped her journey as a first-generation physician and musculoskeletal radiologist to educator, department chair and health system executive. She shares lessons from her blue-collar upbringing, the mentors and sponsors who influenced her career, and why building strong teams and creating opportunities for others have become central to her leadership philosophy. Their conversation explores her concept of the “horizontal ladder,” the importance of taking on roles before you feel completely ready, intentionally developing the next generation, and knowing when it is time for leaders to pass the baton. Dr. Casagranda also reflects on turning advocacy for equity and change into collective action and looks ahead to the transformation of healthcare through population health, value-based care and AI and what those changes could mean for the future of radiology. At its core, this is a conversation about courageous leadership, lifelong learning and the responsibility leaders have to make both people and organizations better all while bringing others along on the journey. Behind the Mic! Dr. Bethany Casagranda has been married for 12 years and is the proud mom of two daughters—one is a 21-year-old senior at the University of Michigan, and the other is an 11-year-old heading into fifth grade. When she's not working, you'll often find her on the tennis court or taking advantage of any opportunity to escape to the mountains, relax by a lake in Maine, or visit England. A self-proclaimed anglophile, she's always happy when a trip takes her across the pond. Although she always envisioned a future in radiology, Dr. Casagranda also had an interest in education and could easily have seen herself pursuing a career as an educator. When it comes to food, she's refreshingly easy to please—she hasn't met a cuisine she doesn't enjoy. Her favorite drinks tend to follow the seasons, with tequila and vodka cocktails in the warmer months and bourbon becoming the beverage of choice when the weather turns cooler. A perfect rainy day for Dr. Casagranda is a quiet one at home, curled up in her favorite spot with honey tea, a cozy blanket, a great magazine, and some jazz playing in the background.
