La Jetée

One of the most famous short pictures of all time, Chris Marker's La Jetée (1962) combines still images and documentary techniques to create a haunting and beautiful film which has served as an inspiration for many later filmmakers, most notably Terry Gilliam via Twelve Monkeys (1995) which reworked Marker's story to tragicomic effect. A condemned prisoner is sent backwards in time by scientists hoping to secure the future of humanity by mining the past. As condensed into one of the marketing loglines for the Gilliam film, the future is history.
