At 10:32 a.m. on April 12th a bomb goes off on Fulton and Dutch Street in Lower Manhattan. At first, it is suspected to be a dirty bomb, radiating 12 square blocks and blowing east into Brooklyn. Millions of New Yorkers flee. A day later media outlets report that an unknown illness is moving across the five boroughs. Millions more move onto the mainland. The Federal Government orders all remaining citizens out of the city. The military moves into evict all those who refuse to leave. They repatriate most, but not all. Not Conrad McGowan. He stays put. Conrad cannot shake Rafael and his attempt to make a trans-continental to a free Los Angeles. In an attempt to suppress the press, Conrad and his body guard conduct a guest edit of the Voice's walls in Astor Place, tearing down the articles of Natalie and her father, Bowman.
